About 400 leaders working on the Latin American real estate market participated in the 4th edition of Latin America GRI on March 27 and 28, in New York. The intense agenda included high-level discussions about the most diverse real estate segments, in an informal, select, and networking-facilitating atmosphere.

During the two days of the event, executives, entrepreneurs, and investors doing business in the most important Latin American countries - Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Peru - discussed the future of the real estate industry in the region, deepening their relationships with their pairs.

"This was the biggest edition of the event, with all major Latin American countries represented in an expressive way. During the meeting, new partnerships were established, and the know-how on the market updated, in an atmosphere that drove proximity among the leaders and the expansion of the real estate industry in the region,” noted Leonardo Di Mauro, GRI Club's head of Real Estate for Latin America.

Over the last few years, Latin America GRI has brought together more than a thousand leading players working on the Latin American real estate market. Attending this year were leaders from Brookfield, Cadillac Fairview, Equity International, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Bancolombia, Cerberus, GTIS Partners, BTG Pactual, Jaguar Growth Partners, GIC, Fibra Uno, HSBC, and the Peninsula Investment Group.

Trends and business generation

One of the highlights of the 2019 program was the participation of Wayne Berger, CEO of the IWG group (holder of brands like Regus and Spaces) for Canada and Latin America, as keynote speaker. He spoke about the future of real estate in a long-term perspective, highlighting the social transformations already underway – such as the emergence of new generations and the restructuring of cities – that will dictate where the market should aim to meet the new demands.

Other topics were also under the limelight in the agenda, such as the prospects for investments in Latin America, the most attractive countries and areas for new developments, and risk taking; traditional versus alternative funding formats; the potential of the residential segment as a whole – considered the star of the market, in line with the results of the most recent edition of the GRI Barometer in Latin America – and, in particular, the evolution of residential projects for income in Latin America, including their operating challenges and scale; the overview of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and real estate trends and new formats.

Residential and hospitality

The second edition of GRI Hospitality Latin America 2019 was held simultaneously with the Latin America GRI 2019 program, addressing topics dedicated to the hotel industry in the region, as well as the debut of GRI Residential Latin America, which fostered debates on residential developments in the region, bringing together leaderships of large companies. Participating in GRI Hospitality Latin America were, for example, Fibra Hotels, IDB, HSL, IHG, Marriott International, AccorHotels, and Hard Rock International, while Up Capital, CCLA Multifamily Group, and Paladin Realty Partners, among others, attended GRI Residential Latin America.

In the same week, the GRI Club offered these events’ participants the opportunity to visit innovative developments in New York. This was the second edition of GRI New York Week. The GRI delegation got to know the details of projects such as Related Companies and Oxford Properties’ Hudson Yards, and SLL Green’s One Vanderbilt.

To close the agenda, there was also the GRI Great Minds Program New York 2019, an intensive course held in partnership with Syracuse University, to dive deeper into topics such as strategies for attracting international investments, modeling, and developing new projects.
