180 real estate leaders gathered in Mexico GRI 2019

5 MIN READJune 26, 2019
About 180 leaders of the real estate market in Mexico gathered at the 5th edition of Mexico GRI on June 18 and 19, at The St. Regis Mexico City, in Mexico City. During the 2 days, top executives, developers and investors active on the Mexican market discussed the real estate industry in the country, looking for potential business relationships. The program was made up of very high-level sessions about the different segments and trends, in an informal format, promoting a great environment for networking.

"In a time of political and economic uncertainty, it’s very important that the main local and international players come together to discuss the challenges of the sector and what’s coming up in real estate investments in Mexico," said Leonardo Di Mauro, head of Real Estate for GRI Club Latin America.

More than 500 leading executives of the real estate market in the country have attended the five editions of the event. This year there were players from Credit Suisse, Equity International, Fibra MTY, Fibra Uno, Greystar, Hines, Ivanhoe Cambridge, TC Latin America Partners, Union Investment Real Estate and Walton Street Capital.

Careful optimism

The agenda started with Alonso Cervera, managing director of Credit Suisse, with a presentation on his economic perspective in Mexico. He showed the results of an internal survey carried out among the bank's clients, among which are national and foreign investors, developers and other companies from several productive sectors. He pointed out that we need to look at the current opportunities and the short and medium term landscape with caution.

Then, in a discussion moderated by Vicente Naves, the managing director of Artha Capital, several investors from different parts of the world talked about their views on the Mexican market. The main message was that Mexico is perceived abroad with optimism despite the adverse moment.

One of the highlights of this edition was the participation of Nuno Matos, CEO of HSBC in Mexico, as a keynote speaker. He spoke about the challenges and opportunities in the country, predicting inflation will be low and that there will be no changes in interest rates until the end of the year.

Opportunities in hospitality

One of the most active discussions was focused on hospitality. The main hotel companies in the country participated, such as Grupo Posadas, Hilton, IHG and Marriott, as well as important investors such as AP Capital, Fibra Inn, RLH Properties and Vertex.

The main theme discussed was competition coming from Airbnb at different destinations and how hotels can retain customers using that platform. In addition, participants discussed a few ideas for hotels to be part of the shared economy, incorporating services as co-working spaces or establishing partnerships with transport platforms like Uber to make the user experience more attractive. The investment outlook sounded quite positive as new opportunities are emerging in states such as Nayarit and Quintana Roo.
