West Africa Club MeetingLagos - Nigeria, 28th February 2017

GRI Africa Club met for the first time on 28th of February. In Lagos, the Club Meeting gathered the Club's founding members in the region. Chaired by Uzo Oshogwe, the likes of Colin Mukete, Adeniyi Falade, Odenigwe Ike Michaels and friends discussed the major challenges of the day...

Members felt that Nigeria had hit rock bottom for high-end real estate. However, one developer implored others that it is just about the right product. Luxury units have to compare favourably with Dubai and London. It's not the market’s fault if units don't sell.

Many felt that affordable housing was the greater opportunity. In Abuja alone, there is huge demand. Lagos, whilst more expensive to develop, is also very appealing. The most realistic segment was agreed to be the mid/upper end of affordable, where mortgage providers will lend. Beneath that segment, developers need to be creative with payment structures.

Many agreed that the Francophone region was a stable and attractive market. However, many Nigerian members agreed that it was prudent to first master the market where one feels most comfort.

Members felt that further to using GRI Club to network and share ideas, the Members could join together to communicate more effectively with policy makers.
