Overview

The GRI Global Club held the showcase event in the CEE Chapter on the 12-13 June 2017 in Vienna at the 12th annual CEE GRI.

Senior property investors, lenders and developers gathered to discuss market opportunities and foster business friendships. See below for a summary of the two day meeting, which focused on harnessing real estate opportunities in CEE & SEE.

CEE GRI started with the keynote address - an Economic Overview of CEE by Andreas Schwabe, Senior Economist, Raiffeisen Bank International. CEE is demonstrating consistent growth, fundamentals are good and the bigger picture is very promising. Healthy demographic trends, inflation and unemployment figures all constitute to a decent basis for further growth. The overview provided valuable economic statistics on all countries in CEE with particular focus on core ones.

The Networking Dinner took place at Das Loft Restaurant, Sofitel Vienna.

The second day of CEE GRI started with a talk-show session chaired by Robert Martin, Founding Partner & Head of CEE, Europa Capital. Key investors and developers discussed why real estate market in CEE has been consistently growing over the recent years, what asset classes/countries are on the rise and how long this trend is expected to continue.

Discussions covered a multitude of real estate sectors and countries, both mature and emerging, with particularly fruitful discussions on offices, retail, institutional capital.

Eric has over 22 years of experience in the real estate sector, principally as a developer and investor. He is a US national and spent the majority of the last 15 years in Europe, initially investing in Belgium, Germany, and the Slovak Republic. Eric has completed over €1 billion of real estate transactions throughout US and Europe. In 2002, he launched and built Bifrost Investment Group (predecessor to Revetas Capital) into a leading CEE investment and asset manager. Since 2009, he has actively developed a platform to restructure and recapitalise distressed real estate in CEE. By early 2013, Eric successfully restructured and recapitalised over €200 million of debt leading to the formation of Revetas Capital.

Prior to Atrium, Scott was Portfolio Manager for Heitman's European Private Equity Group. Previously, he was based in Netherlands as General Manager for ING Real Estate's development and restructuring activities where he oversaw various developments and standing investments throughout Europe. Before that, he was M.D. of Central Europe for Unibail-Rodamco, responsible for the acquisition, development and management of quality retail space in 8 countries. Scott received a BB from UTS in Sydney, and is a CPA.

Dr. Jais joined Apollo Management in 2010 and is a Partner in Apollo ’s European Principal Finance Funds. Prior to joining Apollo Management, Dr. Jais was a Vice President at Hudson Germany, where he was responsible for the screening, execution and closing of distressed investments and real estate opportunities on behalf of Lone Star Funds. Prior to that, Dr. Jais was an associate in the European Securitization group at Citigroup in London with a focus on large commercial real estate loans. He graduated summa cum laude from the Technical University in Munich and holds a PhD from the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. Dr. Jais is a native German speaker.

Apart from the Czech office, Mr. Klein is also responsible for company activities in Germany. Doron Klein was born in Israel, where he obtained bachelor´s degree in finance from Haifa University and graduated from University of New York in Prague, Czech Republic, where he obtained MBA degree. He has been working in the real estate sector since 2005 and has been at AFI Europe since 2008. He speaks Hebrew, Czech and English.

Vlaho is the Head of Property and Tourism Team of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). He is a seasoned real estate professional with more than 15 years’ experience in the commercial real estate sector in CSEE and MENA regions. EBRD’s cumulative investment in the property sector exceeds EUR2.5BN until today with over 160 projects financed throughout the region. Prior to joining EBRD in 2011, Vlaho held the position of Development Director in TriGranit, a leading commercial property developer in CEE. He holds a MBA from Imperial College, University of London.

Mr. Schwabe studied economics and finance in Germany and Russia. He is fluent in Russian. In 2007, he joined Raiffeisen Bank International in Vienna as a country analyst on CIS countries and Turkey. In 2011, he successfully accomplished the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He received a Forecast Accuracy Award for his macroeconomic forecasts for Ukraine in 2015 by Consensus Economics. Since 2012, as Senior Economist for CEE, Mr. Schwabe is responsible for macroeconomic coverage of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) at RBI. In his role, he is regularly presenting RBI research views to international corporate clients and financial market investors. Moreover he is developing macroeconomic stress testing models for the CEE region.

Mr.Gereben started his real estate carrier with Cushman and Wakefield Property Advisers as Leasing Associate and he looked after major corporate instructions both on the tenant and Landlord side. After spending 4 years in Cushman, he joined Trigranit Development Corporation in 2007 and fulfilled various roles. From 2011 he was promoted to lead the Asset Management Department within TriGranit and look after the company's portfolio through the CEE region. Mr.Gereben joined CPI PG in June 2015 as Country CEO and he is responsible for leading the Hungarian operation with 75 people and more than 20 assets under his guidance. Mr.Gereben holds a Bachelor degree in business management and a Master’s degree in management consulting.

Prior to that, Dr. Jais was an associate in the European Securitization group at Citigroup in London with a focus on large commercial real estate loans. He graduated summa cum laude from the Technical University in Munich and holds a PhD from the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. Dr. Jais is a native German speaker.

Prior to Atrium, Scott was Portfolio Manager for Heitman's European Private Equity Group. Previously, he was based in Netherlands as General Manager for ING Real Estate's development and restructuring activities where he oversaw various developments and standing investments throughout Europe. Before that, he was M.D. of Central Europe for Unibail-Rodamco, responsible for the acquisition, development and management of quality retail space in 8 countries. Scott received a BB from UTS in Sydney, and is a CPA.
